The Restoration Project Book

Side Bardisciple group

Is there more to the Christian life than what we experience right now? What is this peace that passes all understanding (Ph. 4:7)? What does it feel like to pray without ceasing (1 Thess. 5:17)? Jesus promises that he will always be with us (Mt. 28:20). Well, where is he?

About fifteen hundred years ago St. Benedict developed a practical way to make these scriptural promises our own. He wrote a brief Rule of Life, which is a kind of structure, to help us claim God’s gifts for us.

The heart of the rule is his twelve steps of humility where he describes spiritual growth over the course of a lifetime. The Restoration Project book takes the twelve steps and makes them relevant and useful for today’s disciples.

1. The first four steps are Watchfulness, Healthy Desire, Sacred Obedience and Patience. These four practices are the foundation for our future growth.

2. The fifth step is Radical Self-Knowledge. It is where we accept the wonderful mystery that we are made in the image of God, but are in need of restoration.

3. Steps six to eight are three trials that purify and strengthen us.

4. Steps nine to twelve help us, through Jesus, to be masters of ourselves so that we may be servants of others.
